Microplastics have been proven to be pollutants in several stream systems, surface wells, and sea. The presence of microplastics is not spared from human activities on land by using plastic for daily activities. In marine waters, microplastics with a small size (<5mm) can contribute to the food supply chain, especially food sources from the sea and lead to humans on land.
On August 7-8, 2024 at the Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, lecturer of Environmental Science Study Program, Prof. Hadiyanto through the International Academic Network (AN) program with the UNdip World Class (WCU) fund attended the ASEAN Regional Workshop: Mitigation of Microplastic Pollution and Implications for Fisheries and Human Health organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.
At this workshop, several research and policies from Asian and European countries have been presented. The event was opened by the Rector of Chulalongkorn University and the Norwegian Ambassador to Thailand.
With more than 50 participants, several speakers who attended this workshop include Vilde Kloster Snekkevik from the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Memon from Regional Coordinator for Chemicals and Pollution Action, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Isara Chanrachkij, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), Dr. Vong Sok, Environment Division, ASEAN Secretariat, Marc Metian, of Marine Environment Laboratories, International Atomic Energy Agency. The speaker from Indonesia is Dr. Muhammad Reza Cordova, of the Research Center for Oceanography (BRIN).
On the second day (August 8, 2024), a facility visit to Waste treatment at Chulalongkorn University, as a university that ranked 2 for Greenmetric UI in Thailand.
Prof. Hadiyanto also had the opportunity to visit The joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE), King Mongkut University of Technology Thornburi, Thailand. This visit is to continue the Cooperation that has been pioneered since 2019 and has produced several joint publications in several reputable international journals.
